Dear Dr. Shultz

Warmest greetings to you. I made a keen observation in the book of Genesis, pertaining to Hagar and her son, when they were both put out by Abraham at the instruction of Sarah. The bibles tells us that she wept, yet in the same chapter it says that the Lord heard the voice of the lad. How do you explain this for it is the woman who cried and not the lad.

David, the child was old enough to cry for himself under the bush since he was 17 years old.  We are told about Hagar crying out to God but Ishmael was also crying out since he would have known the promise made to his mother and yet he was lying there next to death.  Hagar may not have heard him since she moved away unable to bear watching him die, but God heard him loud and clear.  No conflict here.
