Baptists/Why build booths?

Question
Dear Pastor Carpenter:
In Mt. 17:4 Peter offers to build booths for Jesus, Moses, and Elijah. Why did Peter want to do this?
God Bless,
Sam

Answer
Hi Sam,

I believe that Peter wanted to somehow honor each of these prophets equally by building a monument to each of them.  The point of this passage is that they were not equal.  The voice from Heaven thundered out "THIS IS MY SON!"  Then Peter James and John realized that Jesus out ranked the other prophets.

I hope that this helps you understand a bit better.  We are not told exactly what the booth was or why, we simply know that they were intended to be equal monuments to each prophet.

I hope this helps you.

In Christ
