Question
Is there any biblical reference to women taking the man's last name? Why is it that men do not take women's last name?

Answer
Hi Jerrick,
Women taking their husband's last name comes from our Occidental (Western)culture and also from principles concerning marriage in the Bible.   It facilitates identifying a woman with her husband and his family, and with their children. It also was practiced for legal reasons as well.  In Eastern countries most times the women keeps her family name and does not change it.   It varies from culture to culture, even country to country.
Although the Bible does not specifically address this there is the principle of God that a man and woman who are married become one flesh.   See Gen. 2:7-24; 5:1-4.   Ephesians 5:24-31 teaches the relationship of a husband and wife as being like the union of Christ and His body.
Does God require woman to take her husband's name?   No, but if she understands the union of marriage has God gave it to use...she should want to bear her name. I think a woman who honors the Lord will also honor her husband and bear his name.
