Baptists/Independent versus Souther Baptist

Question
I am an Independent Baptist who has some questions regarding the differences between Independent and Southern Baptist. I know some of the differences include involvement with the SBC, KJV only and separatism...I am just looking for a more in-depth study. Thanks.

Answer
Dear Terry,
Thank you for writing.  I'm not sure I can help very much.  I think some of the differences are blurred depending on where one is located.  For example, in our area the only Baptist churches available are Southern Baptist.  A couple of hours away there is a Bible Baptist college and many Bible Baptist churches.
Because the pro-life and pro-traditional marriage issues are so much under attack by so many, in churches and elsewhere, conservatives are working together more.  The monopoly of evolution in schools has undermined any standards of right and wrong, as well as undermined the credibility of the Bible and Its message.  I think these issues divide the church and denominations more than Bible versions and other church practices.
I feel that being uniquely made in God's image means that some differences in Christians make for a more brilliant reflection of God's image, like a many faceted diamond, rather than just one flat surface.
The study of doctrine and letting God's Word direct our lives, is very important in order to faithfully follow God's will.  It's good that you're interested in learning more.  I apologize for not having any websites or other study resources to share with you.  I pray that you'll find others more helpful.
   Sincerely,

I have time for you. The Bible has been my guiding light for most of the 56 years of my life. My missionary parents in Brazil kindled a love for God`s Word by their example and their love for truth. The Lord has blessed my husband and me with responsible, independent children who love and serve the Lord and are our best friends. I would enjoy discussing any subject or problem from a Biblical perspective.

Experience

I help lead music in a small Southern Baptist Church. Although I rarely have the opportunity to play, I do play the bass guitar, drums, tambourine, harmonica and piano. I like Southern Gospel and praise choruses, but only know by heart the words from the hymnal, and my vocal range is half an octave lower than most music is written, but fortunately my husband transposes well and also plays by ear.
