Baptists/Mixing of Ot and NT

QuestionHi Dr. Tim Gladu
I began attending church in 1970 then quit going to church in 1992 and returned again in 2002 a break of ten years. I also began watching and listening to Christian radio, TV and looking on the internet. We began going to church again and heard some wierd things comming from the pulpit as well as the media. We tried many different denominations and found them to all be about the same.
It seems to me that there has been a shift in preaching for the most part from the New Testament to The Old Testament. There are a number of groups that are even preaching if you are not celebrating Jewish festivals and obeying the commandments, you will not be saved and no these are not Seventh Day Adventist.
I know we are in the last days when false teachings will abound but I did not expect it to be so prevalent in Christian churches. But on the other hand there will be apostasy in the last days so I should not be surprised that it is happening.
Why the shift into the Old Testament? Isn't this one reason that Jesus died, to set us free from the bondage of the law?
Thanks
Murel
AnswerMurel,
I do not know which churches you have been attending, but I do not see the same things happening. There are stories and other things that happened in the Old Testament that we can use today. Yes Jesus did set us free from the bondage of the law, but even Jesus used the Old Testament in His earthly ministry. There is much that we can learn from the entire Bible and we should use it in ministry when we can. The New Testament does speak more of the love of God and how important grace is for us. I would encourage you to continue to seek out a church that you can hear the word of God in all the glory God made it for us all. I have been in the Southern baptists for about 10 years and I have found that most of them use the New Testament more than the Old. Please continue to seek the face of Jesus. he will help you in your search for true spirituality.
