Baptists/Tatoos

Question
Hi Pastor Carpenter,

Does the Bible say anything against tatoos?

Answer
Hi Brison.

Thanks for this question.  THe Bible does not specifically refer to tatoos as being wrong across the board.  There is an Old Testament prohabition on putting marks or cuttings in honor of the dead ( a pagan ritual).

Leviticus 19:28
28 Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD.
The King James Version, (Cambridge: Cambridge) 1769.

This is the only passage that I can think of where one might get an idea that all tatoos are wrong...but I don't think that this passage is that clearly against all tatoos.

I hope that this helps.

In Christ,
Pastor Don

Expertise

I believe that every word of the Bible is God-Breathed. This blessed book is the foundation of truth for faith and practice. If you ask this volunteer a question you will receive an answer from the Bible that is based upon a litteral, normal interpretation, taking into account the grammar and culture of the time.

Experience

I have been in the ministry almost 20 years. During this time, the Lord has used me as Senior Pastor, counsellor, youth pastor and generally in the equipping of the saints for the work of the ministry.
