Question
Is it more biblical for a Christian's body to be buried or cremated after death? Will the choice, in any slightest way, affect the resurrection or ultimate destiny of the person?

Answer
Hello Barry,
Thank you for the question. As far as I am aware there is no clear teaching in scripture about the issue of which is right burial or cremation. It was and is Jewish practice for bodies to be buried and Christians initially adopted the same practice. However, Abraham seemed willing to offer Isaac as a a burnt offering without any obvious concern about its effect on his eternal destiny. The teaching of resurrection is based on the burial model but that is inevitable when the practice of the time is considered. Scripture teaches the general resurrection of those who are in Christ. In doing so it never gives any warnings about the importance of burial. When a body is buried in some acidic soils the bones disintegrate over a comparatively short time, leaving little that is identifiable. Resurrection cannot therefore depend upon the state of the raw material. If that were the case those who are burnt to death in accidents would be particularly unfortunate! Resurrection is a miracle wrought by God and I am sure He can manage the situation whether a body is buried or cremated.
Having said all that I would prefer to be buried but only for traditional, sentimental reasons. However, I have told my wife that when the time comes the choice is hers, as I'll be too busy enjoying the Lord's presence to care either way.
I hope my comments are of some help.
