Answer
Hi, April.  Thanks for writing and for caring about this subject.  As a Christian we do want to do whatever we can to be a good representative for Christ.  I'm from the north and even I am impressed when people use the terms "sir" and "ma'am."  To not use those terms in the south may be considered by some people to be disrespectful, and so lose some credibility as a Christian witness.  If I were you, I would really notice when and where those terms are used by others, then try to fit in using the highest standard.
Along with age, you might consider using the terms to indicate a non-familiarity, or safe distance from others unless specifically welcomed to drop the formality.  I'm sure it would not be out of line to give a formal answer to anyone who is in an adult supervisory position.
Such manners often open doors to connect well with others, besides helping your Christian witness.  Best wishes on your new life in the south.
   Love,

I have time for you. The Bible has been my guiding light for most of the 56 years of my life. My missionary parents in Brazil kindled a love for God`s Word by their example and their love for truth. The Lord has blessed my husband and me with responsible, independent children who love and serve the Lord and are our best friends. I would enjoy discussing any subject or problem from a Biblical perspective.

Experience

I help lead music in a small Southern Baptist Church. Although I rarely have the opportunity to play, I do play the bass guitar, drums, tambourine, harmonica and piano. I like Southern Gospel and praise choruses, but only know by heart the words from the hymnal, and my vocal range is half an octave lower than most music is written, but fortunately my husband transposes well and also plays by ear.
