Question
Hi,

What does it mean when it is said that "whoever calls upon the
name of the Lord shall be saved" exactly? I'm confused by the
phrase "upon the name of the Lord"...does this mean that
whoever asks Jesus to be saved will be?

Thanks,
Matt Bachman

Answer
Dear Matt,
Thanks for writing.  You have a good question that I believe has a "yes" and a "no" answer.
Yes, whoever asks Jesus to be saved will be, because Jesus paid the way.  This is God's Way and the only Way to the Father (John 14:6).
The phrase "upon the name of the Lord" means a person must accept the total character of God's Lordship for his or her life--accept Jesus as his or her Way, Truth, and Life.  If a person only wants to be saved from hell, not from the sin that Jesus died for, so we wouldn't have to go to hell, then I believe the answer is "no," that person wanting that kind of salvation, will not truly be saved until he or she recognizes the error of his or her direction and desires to follow Jesus instead--wants to be His disciple.
Someone gave me a little saying that goes along with this.  "The faith that fails to finish was flawed from the first."  A flawed faith may be an effort to be religious enough to earn salvation, starting with a sinner's prayer, or, a flawed faith may be simply a future "fire insurance" without wanting God's presence and His character at all.  If a person isn't interested in Jesus as the Way, the Truth, and the Life for his or her own life, then it seems that that person hasn't really called on the name of the Lord.
I appreciate you bringing this up as it reminds me of God's unwillingness that any should perish, so I should be willing and sensitive to God's leading me to share salvation with others.  Writing this has helped me prepare for the next opportunity God brings.
Have a wonderful day and a wonderful forever through Jesus!

I have time for you. The Bible has been my guiding light for most of the 56 years of my life. My missionary parents in Brazil kindled a love for God`s Word by their example and their love for truth. The Lord has blessed my husband and me with responsible, independent children who love and serve the Lord and are our best friends. I would enjoy discussing any subject or problem from a Biblical perspective.

Experience

I help lead music in a small Southern Baptist Church. Although I rarely have the opportunity to play, I do play the bass guitar, drums, tambourine, harmonica and piano. I like Southern Gospel and praise choruses, but only know by heart the words from the hymnal, and my vocal range is half an octave lower than most music is written, but fortunately my husband transposes well and also plays by ear.
