Question
Has there always been a mourners bench in the missionary baptist church?

Answer
Hi Susie,
Thanks for your question.  The mourners bench came into being after the Great Awaking in the late 1700s and early 1800s when there was a great revival period in American.  Evangelists and preachers would urge people to come to the front of the church to a mourners bench to repent of their sins and also for the lost to come repent and be saved.
It began very popular in Kentucky, Tennessee in what were called the Cane Ridge revivals (camp meeting revivials) in the early 1800's and was used in both Methodist and Baptist Churches.
It was greatly used and made popular by men such as DL Moody, Charles Finney.

Before that period I cannot find any record of a mourners bench being used.
Hope this helps.  If you have further questions or comments please write.
