Question
Hi Rev. Woods,

Is the Baptist church the one most associated with slavery in the US?  If this is so, which denomination are we talking about?  Is it the Southern Baptist?

Thanks.

Answer
Blessings and thank you for your question.

Before the civil war, there was only 1 Baptist Convention.  The issue of slavery divided the Northern and Southern Baptist Churches.  When it was evident that the Baptist convention was moving agaist slavery, the southern churches left the convention and formed the Southern Baptist Convention.  The Northern Baptist Convention continued on.  They later changed their name to the American Baptist Convention.

The Southern Baptist convention has since denouced slavery and has repented openly of this sin.
