Barbecue/Electric smoker using wood chipsd

Question
I just purchased an electric Brinkman Smoker. What is the process to use wood chunks or chips with an electric smoker?  Do I put them directly on the heating element?  Thanks for the help.

Might be a dumb answer, but what does your owners manual say? A google search says that you put the wood chunks on the lava rock, not the heating element.  So I would not use chips.  There are several models so try doing a google search for your model.  Here is something that I found:
