Bariatric Surgery/eating post VSG

Question
I just attended my pre-op seminar(I'm scheduled for April 15th,08), and am aware that post-operative I will be taking in only fluids high protein drinks and eventually soft proteins. Being Latina, I enjoy spicy foods, will I ever get to a point when I can have a taco with hot salsa, or an enchilada?

Answer
Hi Leticia:

I haven't heard of any VSGers having trouble with spicy foods.  As for a taco or enchilada...the issue may be how much you can consume if you eat the tortilla.  Most people (especially early post-op...say first 6 months), usually eat the insides of things like tacos, enchiladas, and sandwiches.  It's not about not being able to eat the tortilla, rather more an effort to eat "the good stuff" and get more protein in.

Good luck with your surgery. :)

Expertise

I'm very familiar with the four main types of bariatric surgery: Lap-Band/Adjustable Gastric Band, Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y, and Duodenal Switch. I'm familiar with the Mini-Gastric Bypass and Revisions as well. I'm also beginning my seventh year post-op as a successful bariatric patient--so I can answer questions regarding pre-op, post-op honeymoon, and maintenance phases. I'm less familiar with the nuances of plastic surgery following bariatric surgery--but I do know a bit.
