Question
I recently saw a commercial on tv for the lap band surgery, I weigh 265 so i would like to at least loose 100 lbs. Ive been trying to loose weight on my own but my weight just keeps going up and down. How heavy do you have to be to have the lap band surgery?

Answer
Brittanie,

Most likely if you weigh 265 and have at least 100 pounds to lose you would qualify for bariatric surgery such as a Lap Band (Adjustable Gastric Band) or gastric bypass.

Generally the criteria is that you have to have a BMI of 40 or higher or a BMI of 35 or higher with significant comorbidities such as diabetes, sleep apnea, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, or other things.

To calculate your BMI, you can go here: http://www.obesityaction.org/measuringobesity/calculatebmi.php

To read about options in bariatric surgery including Adjustable Gastric Banding (such as the Lap Band), you can go here: http://www.obesityaction.org/weightlossoptions/bariatricsurgery.php

If you are seriously considering surgery as an option for your weight, it is best to start by having a conversation with your primary care doctor.  You will also want to find out about your insurance coverage and, if surgery is covered, what steps you might have to take to qualify for surgery.  I also advise going to informational sessions (which are typically free and offered frequently) at several local bariatric surgery centers to learn about that procedures, meet the doctors and talk to current patients. A good place to find programs in your area is: http://www.asbs.org/html/about/membersearch2.html

Best of luck to you!
