Question
Dawn, My husband Dave has applied for out of country coverage.  I have been reading how difficult it is becoming.  I guess I was wondering your opinion; I will run thru his issues.  He is diabetic with severe Neuropathy, high blood pressure, high Cholesterol .  He is 41 years old and has a BMI of 51 he is 5 foot 10 and weighs 354lbs.  The forms have been summited and we are waiting.  Just wondering your opinion

Answer
Did your doctor sign a box on page 2 for death or tissue damage.  He has all the big criteria needed for OHIP and based alone on his comorbidities, he is absolutely meeting criteria for out of country. I would surprised if he was NOT approved because he has such a high degree of tissue damage. OHIP is a bit tricky and wants one of those boxes signed...so as long as it is done, he is absolutely going to get approval!  Please let me know when he is.

Do you know of the support group in your area? If you email me at diminishingdawn@cogeco.ca   I can forward the info on your local support group provided you are in an area that has one :)

Good luck to your hubby!

Expertise

I will help anyone with general questions about roux en y gastric bypass specifically and my own personal experiences. I am specificially looking to help other Ontarians with learning about the process and qualifying for surgery through OHIP. I can answer general questions about the complications, lifestyle and requirements of roux en y surgery. I am not an expert in all forms of bariatric surgery so if you are inquiring about such things as Lapband, Duodenal Switch, I can only answer general questions about them. I had roux en y laproscopic surgery.

Experience

I had my surgery in 2006, am very active in the WLS community and run a local support group. I am a researcher as well and enjoy sharing what I learn with others.
