Bariatric Surgery/Constipation after RNY surgery

Question
I am 5 weeks after RNY surgery. I am drinking 68 ounces of fluid a day(Most days). I am constipated its very painful when I try to go and all I have been able to pass through is about a tablespoon of bright red blood. I am taking benifiber and stool softeners for the last three days. I am eating less than what they suggest because any protein that I put in my mouth makes me feel nauseated. The broth and non fat cottage cheese is the only thing that sits well.
any suggestions or is this normal. I have an appointment with the trainer today and thought I might talk to the nurse then. Should I do my first training session?

Answer
Ms. Gill,
Constipation is fairly common after gastric bypass, though usually not at this early stage.  You seem to have the correct understanding that fluids are important for bowel function.

I hope this situation has improved since you wrote your question.  If not this would be best handled directly with your surgical team.

Best Wishes,
Dr JP
