Bariatric Surgery - Kidney donation after lapband

Expert: Jacqueline Jacques, ND - 8/26/2009

Question
I was wondering if you can donate a kidney after you have lap-band surgery?

Answer
Denise,

If you are healthy and the kidney is healthy, the answer is most likely yes.  Because the Lap Band does not cause malabsorption like a gastric bypass, you do not have the same risks.  I would talk to your bariatric surgeon if this is something you are seriously considering - they may want you to wait some period of time after your Lap Band placement or have other advice, but I cannot think of any serious reason why this might not be possible.

In Health,

Dr. Jacques
