Bariatric Surgery/Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Question
Hi. I am 5 weeks post-op from my Gastric Sleeve surgery.  To this day I am having a hard time keeping soft foods and creamy soups down. I was admitted back into hospital 2 weeks post-op for dehydration and I ended up in ER 4 days ago due to very low potassium level. I eat approximately 2-3 ounces per meal. About 2 or 3 mins after eating I am throwing my food back up. I struggle to get in enough water every day and have come no where near getting enough protein.  I feel sick every single day and am just sick of being sick. I regret my decision to have this surgery. My BMI was only 39 and I was going to have the Lap Band done but was somewhat talked into the Sleeve by my surgeon. I feel so helpless and like I will never be able to function normal again.  My surgeon seems to be avoiding my calls, although I do have a follow up appointment at end of the month.  I just cry every day over this.  Any advise?

Answer
I am not a surgeon. That's who you should be talking to directly.  I cannot give you medical advice. I would suggest going to your primary physician.

Most people find there is a learning curve and you are pretty fresh from surgery. For most, they are not chewing enough, going slow enough.

Many people have a nauseous feeling after surgery and go on an antacid type of medication to settle their stomach. I would say that you should go to your primary physician first and I would really try to get a hold of someone at your surgeon's office whether a dietician or surgeon himself. WHo did your surgery?

Have you been on the VSG board at obesityhelp.com?

You might find others in the same situation there and they could help you.

Sorry but I cannot help you. I am not a doctor and I did not have the VSG so I don't feel qualified to give you any kind of advice.

Good luck!

Expertise

I will help anyone with general questions about roux en y gastric bypass specifically and my own personal experiences. I am specificially looking to help other Ontarians with learning about the process and qualifying for surgery through OHIP. I can answer general questions about the complications, lifestyle and requirements of roux en y surgery. I am not an expert in all forms of bariatric surgery so if you are inquiring about such things as Lapband, Duodenal Switch, I can only answer general questions about them. I had roux en y laproscopic surgery.

Experience

I had my surgery in 2006, am very active in the WLS community and run a local support group. I am a researcher as well and enjoy sharing what I learn with others.
