Bariatric Surgery/Appointments & Travel

Question
Hi Dawn

I live in Northern Ontario and I need to go to Downsview 3 separate times before my roux en y surgery.  Once for a consultation with the surgeon, once for a class, and once again to meet with a social worker & dietician.

I am trying to find information as to whether these appointments are covered with the travel grant and I seem to be coming up empty.

I am on a low monthly fixed income and cannot afford to pay for the travel expenses on my own.  I have called the office that handles the Northern Travel Grant and don't know any more than before I called.  The same thing with the actual person who booked my appointments . . . they know nothing.

Do you know anything about this or where I might find out that information?  I need to schedule my flights very soon, and arrange for the care of my special needs child while I am gone. Any information you can help me with, or point me to would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

THis is the information on the travel grant. i have not met anyone who was
successful with using it.

Realistically you might need to save up for surgery and/or borrow money.  You could
ask and see if there is a way that they can cut your trips down but I can't see how
this is going to be feasible.

Expertise

I will help anyone with general questions about roux en y gastric bypass specifically and my own personal experiences. I am specificially looking to help other Ontarians with learning about the process and qualifying for surgery through OHIP. I can answer general questions about the complications, lifestyle and requirements of roux en y surgery. I am not an expert in all forms of bariatric surgery so if you are inquiring about such things as Lapband, Duodenal Switch, I can only answer general questions about them. I had roux en y laproscopic surgery.

Experience

I had my surgery in 2006, am very active in the WLS community and run a local support group. I am a researcher as well and enjoy sharing what I learn with others.
