Bariatric Surgery/One week after surgery and I'm in PAIN

Question
I'm not sure if I should be worried and concerned.  I had RNY 250 cm long 7 days ago and since then i've been in so much pain.  My procedure was laposcopic and the incision under my left breast is killing me.  Actually it's the area around the incision, no teadness, no fever, just feels like a big hard ball around the incision.  Is it just swollen, is it normal?  Help!  I have meds which help a little.  I wouuld walk more, but it kills to stand and walk.

Answer
Hi Wendy:

Usually, the amount of pain you're in should decrease a little each day.  If this isn't happening, and your pain meds aren't helping, then you definitely need to contact your surgeon.  At minimum, if there's nothing more serious involved, s/he can increase your pain meds so that you are comfortable.

Good luck and I hope you feel better soon,
Karla

Expertise

I'm very familiar with the four main types of bariatric surgery: Lap-Band/Adjustable Gastric Band, Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y, and Duodenal Switch. I'm familiar with the Mini-Gastric Bypass and Revisions as well. I'm also beginning my seventh year post-op as a successful bariatric patient--so I can answer questions regarding pre-op, post-op honeymoon, and maintenance phases. I'm less familiar with the nuances of plastic surgery following bariatric surgery--but I do know a bit.
