Question
I had the Roux and Y surgery exactly 3 years ago. Everything has been great until aprox 4 days ago. My roomate made some sort of spicy shrimp for dinner. Ever since then I get acid reflux after I eat.  I haven't had reflux for 3 years. I eat spicy food on a regular basis, to include hot peppers and hot sauce, with no problems. Until now. It's a long holiday weekend and I don't even know what I can take over the counter.  Any advice?

Answer
Lynn,
Sorry about a delay in my reply.  Omeprazole is an acid blocker that is available over the counter, and is OK to take after gastric bypass.

Cautionary note - you may have the new reflux because of an anatomic problem and not because of your roommate's spicy shrimp.  If the discomfort does not resolve very quickly then I recommend you see your bariatric surgeon for further advice.

Best wishes,
Dr JP
