Question
Hello, My name is Samantha. I am 20 years old, i am 5'2 and 220lb.
my uncle is actually having an RNY this month and he referred me to his surgeon. I'M Meeting with her later this month, i have been doing a lot of research and feel that they might denie me because of my age. I also have diabetes. do you think i would be a accepted for surgery and if so how long is the waiting list?

Answer
I don't know of any surgeon that won't take patients over 18 years old so I don't think you have to worry much. Do you know who the surgeon is?

I think diabetes is an excellent reason for having rny but I have to ask you this: Have you tried weight watchers? Have you tried dieting and working out? You have to remember that RNY is considered a last resort so I do have to say this much.  If you haven't tried standard means then you should no way be considering RNY. People do die from this surgery. It's not a quick fix and after a few years you will have to be dealing with the exact same issues that you are dealing with now. Weight WILL be a struggle again.

Make sure you have considered all alternatives as indeed you are still fairly young.

Take care

Expertise

I will help anyone with general questions about roux en y gastric bypass specifically and my own personal experiences. I am specificially looking to help other Ontarians with learning about the process and qualifying for surgery through OHIP. I can answer general questions about the complications, lifestyle and requirements of roux en y surgery. I am not an expert in all forms of bariatric surgery so if you are inquiring about such things as Lapband, Duodenal Switch, I can only answer general questions about them. I had roux en y laproscopic surgery.

Experience

I had my surgery in 2006, am very active in the WLS community and run a local support group. I am a researcher as well and enjoy sharing what I learn with others.
