Bariatric Surgery/Leak Test

Question
Hi, my doctor recently registered me for bariatric surgery in Ontario and his office told me it would be 4 months to wait.  My BMI is around 55 and I really related to your blog (I read the whole thing and found it SO helpful..thank you for writing it!)

In your blog you talk about the Leak Test and to make sure your surgeon does one...do you know if ALL surgeons in Ontario perform this test?  I am most likely going to get referred to Hamilton or Toronto due to where I live and I'm really worried about this.

Thank you!

Answer
Hi there

Surgeons do a standard leak test when inside you but seem to do the second one sometimes -  perhaps if there are problems or a fever etc.

It is much longer than a 4 month wait.   It's more like a minimum of 9 months.   13 months seems to be common.

My husband actually just had his surgery and should be released tomorrow :-) it took him 1.5 years because he had to work on his
Diet a little more.  If you'd like any questions answered I can share our experiences.
We should be heading back to Windsor from Guelph tomorrow --

Keep the spambots away )

Expertise

I will help anyone with general questions about roux en y gastric bypass specifically and my own personal experiences. I am specificially looking to help other Ontarians with learning about the process and qualifying for surgery through OHIP. I can answer general questions about the complications, lifestyle and requirements of roux en y surgery. I am not an expert in all forms of bariatric surgery so if you are inquiring about such things as Lapband, Duodenal Switch, I can only answer general questions about them. I had roux en y laproscopic surgery.

Experience

I had my surgery in 2006, am very active in the WLS community and run a local support group. I am a researcher as well and enjoy sharing what I learn with others.
