Question
I had a RNY 15 years ago and lost 140 pounds. I have gained 70 back. What revisional operation might be suggested for weight loss again and DO REVISIONAL SURGERIES RESULT IN A GREATER OR LESSER WEIGHT LOSS THAN THE ORIGINAL RNY?

Answer
Anita,
Given that your gastric bypass was done 15 years ago, there is a decent chance that there will be the opportunity to do a surgical revision will help you lose additional weight.  It would be premature of me to discuss what options are available to you - the best move would be to visit with an experienced bariatric surgeon in your area.  Bariatric surgeons who have achieved Center of Excellence status can be found on the web at

The second part of your question is certainly pertinent.  For most patients who undergo revision, there is weight loss but it is more modest than the weight loss achieved at the time of the original operation.  A more informative estimate can be made once your experienced local surgeon has had a chance to review your surgical anatomy.

Best wishes,
Dr JP
