Bariatric Surgery/Gastric Sleeve

Question
1.Can proteins, B12 and calcium be digested after gastric sleeve because of absence of HCl secretion in stomach?

Answer
Hello Anil,

The gastric sleeve is still a very new procedure with very little research on nutrition.  The early research that is available points to serious B12 deficiency, folic acid deficiency, iron deficiency and possibly bone loss (one study, very small).  We also have reports of B1 deficiency.  As far as protein goes, one would expect some changes in digestion, but this has not yet been studied to my knowledge.

I hope this helps.
