Question
QUESTION: Dr. Pilcher,

You performed my RNY 11 years ago. I was at about 400 lbs. I now weigh 145 and wear a size 8. I am active and able to enjoy life again. I take no medications at all, other than OTC Prtilosec occasionally. I had gained a fe pounds initially but realized I wasn't using the tools given by this life-saving surgery. I began doing that, and began losing again. Thank you Dr. Pilcher for giving me my life back!!!

ANSWER: Melissa,
You are so very welcome, and thank you for writing!

I hope you are seeing a bariatric specialist in your area, or at least getting the following tests done regularly:

Blood work:
CMP, Mag, CBC, Vitamin D (25-OH), Iron, B12

Also - DEXA scan for bone density

Best wishes!!

QUESTION: Dr. Pilcher,

I moved from San Antonio to Kansas City a little over 6 years ago. I have had these tests regularly. I am always deficient in iron, magnesium and B12. I take supplements religiously but it doesn't seem to change. I am 43 no but have not had a bone scan. I will ask my Dr. about this the next time I go in.

Thanks!
Melissa (Ferrell) Grayless

Answer
Sounds like a great plan.

On the Iron, you may want to see a hematologist to consider IV Iron.  Receiving this once or twice can boost your energy and also your blood count.

On the B12, if you take one under the tongue each day then you should not have persisting deficiency...

Best wishes!
Dr JP
