Bariatric Surgery/Hypothyroid results with WLS comparable to those with normal thyroid function?

Question
I am 35, 5'4 and 240 pounds, with severe sleep apnea and hypertension.  I am currently looking at either RNY or the Lap Band as a tool to help in my weight loss.  I am hypothyroid, controlled through medication. Would I have the same results with surgery that those with normal thyroid function have?  Is one surgery better then the other for hypothyroid patients?

Answer
Tracy,
I believe that, as long as your hypothyroid status is properly treated, it should not have any impact on your success after bariatric surgery.

I don't know of an advantage for Band or Gastric Bypass in reference to thyroid therapy.  In either case, your thyroid levels should be re-checked at 3-6 months after surgery, with adjustment of thyroid dosing as needed.

Best of luck!
