Baseball Instruction/Pitching velocity

Question
QUESTION: Hi my name is Chris and i am a freshman in highschool. I'm in the offseason right now and i need something to boost my velocity for pitching. Pitching is definately my main thing to do. I throw anywhere from around 76-78 and am left handed. Can you help me and see if i should get more velocity or not?

ANSWER: Hi Chris,

Based on your age, I definitely think that your fastball's speed will improve.  I would continue to focus on three things to keep this improvement going:

1.  Keep doing a weight training program.  Choose one that is made for baseball pitchers as it will put extra emphasis on the muscles need to throw harder.

2.  If you are not already, start throwing long toss and begin a running regimen.  These things will help with your longevity and the log toss will also help strengthen your arm's strength and allow you to throw farther.

3.  Begin to take pitching lessons from a baseball instructor in your area that has experience training high school, college and major league players.  By learning the correct mechanics, you can increase the speed of your fastball and remove other mistakes from your pitching motion.

In the end, how much more velocity will get will depend on how much attention you give to steps 1,2, and 3 and your genetics.  Since you have no control over your genetics, I recommend you just keep practicing and applying these tips and you should be in real good shape by the time your senior season rolls around.

QUESTION: Ok thank you i will try that. I am also only 5,7 and haven't had my growth spert yet. Hopefully i will develop more then. I have taken pitching lessons in the past and was told that my pitching mechanics are great and i don't need to take the lessons anymore. Should i sign back up and take some more?

Answer
Hi Chris,

Yes, I think it would be a good idea.  However, make sure you are getting lessons from a top pitching coach.  This means one who has experience training high school, college and pro players.  Even if it costs a little more, it is worth it.  If the coach comes well recommended, they can offer you a number of tips on things to work on.  In addition, it will help set your mind at ease that you are doing all the right things in this area.  Although you do not need to do pitching lessons every year, it is a good idea to get some refresher lessons every couple of years.

Hope this helps,
