Baseball Instruction/ruling on errors

Question
A third baseman charges a bunt and bare hands the ball, throws off balance and the ball short hops the first baseman.  The first baseman does not pick, so the runner is safe.  Is an error charged to the third baseman, or should the batter be given a hit, because this was not a routine play?

Answer
Randy,

It is completely within the judgement of the official scorer.  If the play could not be completed with a reasonable degree of certainty by a fielder, then it should be recorded as a hit.

Lot's of leeway here for the scorer to make the decision.

Hope this helps!
