Baseball Instruction/Fair or foul

Question
A right handed batter strikes a ball that travels directly down and comes to rest in the left handed batters box. Is the ball fair or foul?

Answer
Tim,

When determining fair or foul, you have to judge the ball where is lies between home plate and first or third base.  The foul line usually ends when it reaches the batter's box, but in this case you have to remember that the line (while not there) extends through to the tip of home plate.  So, the umpire must judge whether the ball is fair or foul based upon where the line would have continued to the tip of home plate.

I hope this has answered your question.  Should you have anymore, please don't hesitate to ask.
