miss everything else. any suggestions?

Answer
Joe,
Check where your hands are when you step.  You are probably making too much separation of your hands with your shoulder at this time.  If there is too much separation than your hip and hands don't work together.  The hips should always create the rotation leading the hands.  If the separation happens too soon the hands will take over the swing and the rotational force will not transfer to the swing.  If this is the case you may not be feeling bat speed in your swing or power when you make contact.

The proper position of the hands when you step is about chest high and lined up with your back shoulder.  When you watch the MLB players play on TV you will see this.  Some players start their hands from different positions but they all get to the same load position.

You may not know your hands are out of position ,which will create the long swing, because it is comfortable to you.  You need to make the adjustment with your hands so they get in a better position.  This is going to feel different but try it out.  My recommendation is to start your hands chest high in front of your back shoulder, when you step bring them back a little.  This will create less movement and will keep your hands in a better position.  Make sure when you do your hitting drills (batting T, soft toss, and live) you are checking your positioning.

Also, check which style of hitting you do.  Are you a linear hitter or a rotational hitter?  Most kids are taught by their little league coaches a linear style.  This style keeps the hands high and creates a long wrapping swing.  The rotational swing utilizes the hips and uses a series of positions resulting in more power, and bat speed.

Let me know if I can help you further and thank you for the question,
