Baseball Instruction/Hit by pitch

Question
If a batter is hit by a pitch but his bat goes through the strike zone in his attempt to get out of the way is the batter awarded first base or is it a strike?

Answer
Hey Rick,

If the attempt is to "get out of the way," then it stands as a "hit by a pitch." If he was attempting to swing, then it may be called a strike..
Also, if the pitch was in the strike zone, when he was hit by the pitch, the ump may choose to call the ball a strike.
