Baseball Instruction - hit by thrown ball

Expert: Martin Hoover - 7/23/2008

Question
little league baseball. a runner is heading home he is hit by a thrown ball in the
back it makes him stumble not slide head first he touches home called safe by
the plate umpire. The 3rd base ump said he slide home head fist should be
called out what is the correct call?

Answer
Brian,

If, in the umpires judgement, the runner slid head first, then the runner should be called out.

This is a "have to of been there" situation, as it all falls on the umpires judgement.  I can't honestly say that it was an "accidental" head first slide or not, and therefore cannot say whether the call was correct or not.

Just remember, it is all based on the umpires judgement.

I hope this has helped.  Should you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask!
