Question
runners on first and second the batter hits a ground ball to shortstop runner on second remains on second shortstop tags runner while runner is still standing on second he also steps on second base and then throws the ball to first before the batter reaches first does this constitute a tripple play or is the runner who occupied second base still safe because he was taged while still standing on the base and when the shortstop tagged second it then takes the force play away from third base allowing the runner to remain on second

Answer
Ron:  Great baseball question.

If the SS tagged the runner on 2B before touching second base, then  touched 2B and threw to 1B, triple play.

As soon as the batter put the ground ball in play, the runners on 1B and 2B are in a force situation.  The rules say they must leave the base they is occupying; but don't say when.  If he remains on the base and lets them tag him, he will be out, if the tag is made first.

If the SS touches 2B first, that immediately takes the force off of the runner at 2B.  If he is still at the base, he can remain there.  Should he decide to run on the throw to 1B, a tag is required at 3B for the out.

For an umpire, it all sorts out by what order the SS takes his steps.

Base first, force erased.  Tag first, pending triple play.

Hope this helps sort it out!

Yours in baseball,

Rick
