Baseball Instruction - left hander pitching from stretch

Expert: Brian Flaspohler - 9/29/2008

Question
My son's a lefty and when he pitches from the stretch position he kicks his right foot towards first base but continues to pitch home. He has been warned about a balk. We were always taught it's legal to kick your(foot)and still come home with the pitch. He is not crossing the plains with his foot.Is this a balk?

Answer
Glenn,

I just can't answ3er this question based on a description alone.  Balks are difficult to diagnose and there is significant judgement involved.  I'd suggest going and talking to a knowledgeable coach who can watch your son pitch and help you make a determination.

Hope this helps!

Brian
