Question Please help! With runners at first and second, the ball is hit to the third baseman. R2 advances towards third, but seeing the third baseman with the ball, retreats toward second. R1 has already advanced and is occupying second base. The third baseman, not wanting to chase the runner, fails to tag third for the force out and throws to first to get the batter-runner. R2 never re-occupies second but is called out for retreating. The only interpretation of this I can find is that the third baseman must either; tag the runner, or touch third for the force. Since he did neither, my claim is that the runner may still advance to third on the throw to first. Am I correct?
Answer I totally agree w/ you. All runners have to be "put out" or they are safe by rule. The only exception to this is that many leagues, like Dizzy Dean, do have a "give up" rule that states if in fact you do retreat then you are automatically out. Since you did not advise wht level of play this is, that may or may not be a rule in your situation.
As far as high school, college, %26 pro though you are correct as noted.
