Baseball Instruction - Making a team

Expert: John Priest - 10/31/2009

Question
Hi, my son tried out for the 14 boy's travel baseball team.  He made the C team with only 10 players.  The B team has 12, and the A team has 13.

Would it be inappropriate for me to write to the director of the program and ask if there is an opening in the B team, and if they feel my son is qualified, that we would prefer that he play on that team?  Or would I be committing a faux pas damaging my son's reputation.  Frankly, we don't think the caliber of play or coaching is worth joining the C team?  Please advise.  Thanks.

Answer
Judith,
I don't think that you would be damaging your sons reputation.  However I would be concerned about your reputation and how it may effect how people view your son.  There way be a good explanation to how the teams were split.  I am assuming that the teams were slit based on talent and the A team having the most talent.  The A team may have a more intense schedule requiring more players or the need of keeping more pitchers on the team.  I would find out more info about each team and why there is a difference in numbers for each group.  Another thing to take into consideration is: what else would your son do if he doesn't play on this team.  Is there another option?  I believe some baseball is better than no baseball.  You can always get private instruction if you don't think the current coaches are any good.

Good luck,
John Priest
