Baseball Instruction/batters interference

Question
Runner on 3rd attempts to score on a wild pitch. The batter is backing out of the batters box to avoid any contact. Runner slides safely as ball is throw errantly to the pitcher covering the plate.  Umpire signals a safe call. At that point opposing manager confronts umpire about batter interference. Umpire then changes his judgment call of safe to out without explanation. Can interference be called on the batter if there wasnt any contact? (ball or player)

Answer
There does not have to be any actual contact, (e.g. catcher throwing to second & batter interferes by just being in the way)however, you said he backed out.....So I am assuming that he was not in the way, but obviously I was not there in person.

Thanks for the question......Andy
