Baseball Instruction/9 year old pitcher

Question
QUESTION: I have a  9 year old pitcher with a strong arm - first year pitching - having control problems.  I think he is over striding and not, obviously, releasing the ball at the proper point.  Any advice, or guidelines on the stride or release.  Also, mostly pitching from flat surface.  Thanks.

ANSWER: Hey Gary,

I get this question a lot.. Check my past answers for a little more detail.
First off, have your son throw from the stretch till he gets the control down. The less herky - jerky movement, the better. Have him throw 3 quarters if possible. Also be sure that he steps in the same spot after each pitch.. Without seeing him throw, that's about all I can tell you and advise on.
Good Luck and let me know if it helps at all.

QUESTION: Thanks Dennis - with regard to stepping in the same spot "after the pitch" do you mean the right foot as opposed to the left foot which lands when he strides. Also, any guideline as to the length of the stride.

Answer
Hey Gary,
The landing foot should land in the same spot almost every time. this shows consistency and should help control his pitches some. The length of the stride is whatever feels comfortable to your son. Start somewhere in the middle and change from there. You will see immediate improvement with doing this and pitching from the "stretch." (as if someone is on first base)
Good Luck,
Dennis
