Question
How does an error affect a batters batting average?

Answer
Scooter:  A players batting average is figured by taking the number of hits, lets say 12 and dividing that by the number of at bats, say 50.  That would equate to a .240 avg.

An error lowers your batting average, as does a fielders choice, since both are recorded as a time at bat; but are not hits.

A walk, hit by pitch or sacrifice do not count as a time at bat, they are separate statistics.

Thank you for the question.
