Baseball Instruction - Bats

Expert: Dennis Girardi - 7/14/2009

Question
My son is in the 7th grade and we dont know what size bat to get him?  Should we get him a 32" 26oz or less?  He is 5ft 4" 117 pounds

Answer
Hey Steve,

It's all about feel and what kind of player he is trying to become... What feels right. The ball will travel farther if the bat has more meat on it, but won't do any good if he can't keep up with the pitches thrown to him.
Start off on the heavier side and see how he does in batting practice. If he can get the bat around to the shortstop, providing he is right handed, then let him go with this bat for awhile. Do not purchase a bat till you are sure. Use a team bat, choking up if needed, till you make a decision....
These bats are expensive.
Good luck. I wish i could be more help, but I would have to see your son swing.

Dennis
