Baseball Instruction/Forced Outs

Question
We were playing baseball and we came across weird rule we need some clarification. Runner on first batter hits the ball batter goes to second and stands on base.  Runner from first goes and stops before reaching third.  Man on second stays.  Is it a forced out at third or does he need to be tagged?  And (second question) can run back to second and tell the guy on second to go back to first after the guy on second clearly claimed that base.  We played it as a forced out at third as we did not think the guy on second could reatreat to first. Please Help - Thanks

Answer
Mike,

It is not a force out because the runner is not being forced to vacate the bag at second base.  He does need to be tagged in order to be out.

They can retreat to the previous base, as long as they retouch the bases in order.

I hope this has helped.
