Question
Why do the experts from this site disagree on whether a runner can return to first once the batter is put out?  I have had 2 say that they must advance no matter what and others, including you, who say they can return.  What gives?

Answer
OK, we will make it simple, %26 I appreciate your extra efforts.

Situation:  Runner on first.  Ground ball hit to first baseman.  He then steps on first. (Out one, the force has now been removed.  Now the runner from first must be tagged out.)  Then the first baseman wheels %26 throws to second base, while the runner gets in a run down but after a time ends back up safe at second or even back at first base.  Either way he is safe.

So yes, absolutely the runner may return to first or any other base.  I am certified as a AAA umpire %26 just got back after six weeks of school....I am also a D1 NCAA umpire....I stand by my answer.  I hope this simple explanation clears up your issue.

Good luck.
