Question
Two questions actually:

1) Is it legal for a defensive player to kick the ball, and

2) Tigers C Alex Avilla was given an error and runner was advanced one base when he tried to scoop a ball in the dirt with his mask on a wild pitch. What rule covers this?

Thanks!

Answer
Bill,

Here's the rule on #2 (depending on if the ball was hit or thrown):

7.05 Each runner including the batter-runner may, without liability to be put out, advance—
(b) Three bases, if a fielder deliberately touches a fair ball with his cap, mask or any part of his uniform detached from its proper place on his person. The ball is in play and the batter may advance to home base at his peril; or
(d) Two bases, if a fielder deliberately touches a thrown ball with his cap, mask or any part of his uniform detached from its proper place on his person. The ball is in play;

As far as #1 - totally legal.

Hope this helps!
