Baseball Instruction/batting out of order

Question
in our game tonight, the other team batted out of order and we called it and the umpire called the batter out which ended the inning. when they got up again in the next inning the next batter in the lineup got up instead of the proper batter and the umpire said that it was legal. we thought that the proper batter in the previous inning should bat. what is the rule

Answer
Can you tell me which number in the batting order batted out of order?Lets say the 4th batter hits and then the 6th batter comes to the plate and is walked and the other teams says hey he batted out of order and he is ruled out. The inning ends. The next inning the 7th batter should be batting not the 6th batter. The number 5 batter would have lost a turn at bat.
