Question
14U playing Dizzy Dean rules. While retreating back to first during a pick off attempt the runner jumps over first baseman low tag and lands on first base safely. The umpire says runner safe on bag BUT because He did not attempt to slide back He is OUT!!!! Umpire said all runners must make attempt to slide or dive hands first when retreating back to first. ( unless they can get back standing of course)Just needing clarification please.

Answer
Hi David,
I am not an expert on Dizzy Dean rules. However, when the ball is in fielder's glove and the player jumps over the glove (and player) I don't see a problem. The rule is put in to protect defensive player from being run over and injured.

You might want to check with your head umpire or league rep on this.
