Baseball Instruction/Catchers

Question
My son is an 11 year old catcher playing in a AA league.  What should i expect from him as a catcher?  Should he be able to throw out runners on second?  He has been working very hard and practicing 4 times a week.  Two with team and two with a coach giving extra insruction on catching.

Answer
Joshua,
You should expect proper form and mechanics with receiving the ball, blocking the ball, handling pitchers, and throwing.  If he has good form in these areas throwing out runners will be no problem.  If he doesn't throw out runners than it is either his quickness or arm strength.  I would focus on the quickness of releasing the baseball.  Armstrength will come as your son grows the most important right now is that he gets the proper footwork and fundamentals that a good catcher needs.

Thank you,
