Baseball Instruction/Scoring Question

Question
Runners at first and second and a single is hit to the left fielder who allows the ball to get by him for an error.  Both the runner and second and at first score.  Is only the runner at second an earned run for the pitcher or are both earned?

Thank you.

Ken

Answer
Ken,

It depends on the scorer's judgement, but I think in most cases the runner at second would be earned and the runner at first would be unearned.  However, if the scorer believes the runner at second would not have scored on the hit (maybe a hard hit ball right at the fielder), then that run could also be scored as unearned.

Hope this helps!
