Baseball Instruction/Foul Ball?

Question
A batted ball bounced off home plate and our catcher caught the ball with his bare hand before the ball landed and threw the runner out at first. The catcher was clearly standing in foul territory and the ball would have landed in foul territory if it had landed. However it bounced off the plate and never touched foul territory. Fair or Foul?

Answer
Michael,

The plate is fair territory, so initially the ball is fair.  If the ball was still above fair territory when the catcher caught it (even if the catcher was standing in foul territory) then the ball is fair.  If the ball had spun into foul territory airspace when the catcher caught it, then the ball was foul.

Hope this helps!
