Question
While in the batters box in a proper batting stance, the pitch comes inside and hits the batters hands while he is holding the bat. The batter did not swing and did attempt to get out of the way. What is the ruling?

First, it is in the umpire's judgement on whether the batter made an attempt to get out of the way. That being said, the hands are considered part of the body, and if hit, the batter would be given first base.
However, if in the umpire's judgement the batter did not attempt to avoid the ball, a ball would be awarded to the batter, and he/she would not be awarded first base.
